USA Big Game Hunts

Pronghorn Antelope

These reddish brown mammals generally run about three feet tall and weigh up to 150 pounds. Compared with their body size, their pronged horns are impressive and grow on both sexes, though male horns are bigger.  The horns, which are forked and burl backward, shed and grow back annually.

Whitetail Deer

Every year, in North America, more people hunt for white-tailed deer than any other big game species. Whitetails can be found in every state in the lower 48.

There are 17 recognized subspecies of white-tailed deer in the U.S. and Canada; the largest are the northern woodland, Dakota, and northwest whitetails, and the smallest is the Florida's Key Deer.

Mountain Lion

Mountain lions, also known as cougars, panthers, or pumas, are highly efficient predators. These cats have a wide range throughout the Western states, and populations are increasing. An individual cat's range depends on food availability. Thus, a range can vary from 10 to 370 square miles.

Male lions weigh up to 165 pounds and grow to more than eight feet in length. Females weigh about 100 pounds.

Buffalo

Buffalo, or Bison, are the largest living member in the cow family. Adult weights range from 1,400 to 2,500 pounds for males and 750 to 1,600 pounds for females. Male buffalo have massive appearing front quarters with a large hump above the shoulders; these are covered with woolly hair up to 1.5 inches long that also covers the head and forelegs. This hair will turn tan with age and is two to five times thicker than hind quarter hair.

Turkey

Depending on local rules and regulations, the wild turkey is hunted either in the spring or fall. Spring hunts target gobblers (male turkeys) and fall hunts usually target either sex. Spring hunting coincides with the wild turkey mating season, where gobblers can be called into gun range with calls that mimic the sounds of a hen. Fall seasons occur when turkeys are in flocks, and the typical fall hunt strategy is to "bust up" or "scatter" a flock of turkeys, and then use turkey calls to bring the game back.

Coyote

The coyote is a small, omnivorous, dog-like predator common throughout North and Central America. Following urbanization of the North American continent, the coyote has been one of the only animals whose range and numbers have been shown to generally increase, rather than decrease, in the presence of human development. Because of this, coyotes are sometimes considered pests, especially in agricultural areas, where they are known to kill livestock.

"There is a passion for hunting something deeply implanted in the human breast."

~Charles Dickens
